porting stock heads. What HP gains?

Postby crzy88lx on Tue Apr 03, 2007 5:25 am

I have a mainly stock 88 5.0L and im doing some engine maintenence and so i figured i will get my stock heads ported and get a new valve job. If i ported them out to about 170cc what HP could i be looking at gaining? Also, when i do this, would it be a good idea to get a speed density cam at that point?

Don't port them looking to get "170 cc". Port them so they "flow". Clean up the bowls, take away any burs or ridges, grind down the emission bump on the exhaust side, smooth them out, and get a good valve job along with some good springs. I ran 12.90's with my heads like this (Edelbrock Performer intake, TFS #1 cam, T5, and 3.73s)

If you want to home port them (if you know what you are doing) that's fine, but don't waste your money paying someone or buying parts for E7's, it's just not worth it.
GT40y aluminum heads are only $699 new. That's about $100-$200 more than it's going to cost you to have good headwork done to E7's.

A full zoot set of E7 heads should not have more than 150cc's for max performance...
Unless you are willing to buy better flowing intakes at the same time, any work on E7's is going to result in minimal performance gains due to the stock intakes restrictive design... and then things start snowballing...

I checked the place i got them, and don't see them on their website anymore.
I got them from buyfordracing.com. $699+$24 shipping.
But i sold them back a while.

Look for used heads:
Twisted wedge
Track heat
Gt40x
gt40y
edelbrock rpm

The y's are probably the worst flowing of the bunch, but are usually by far the cheapest.
If you could save up for a while and get the TW's, you'd probably be the happiest.

like stated if u do nothing else to increase flow than it will be completely pointless. there is a good bit of power to be made wit stock heads but u NEED to have the other components (Intake, Headers, Injectors, Cam, etc.)

I have seen practically new $2500+ worked over heads go for $600. Just look around on all the forums. You will find them.
