Mustang 5.0- 5 Speed Transmission

Postby jim1277 on Wed Mar 14, 2007 5:45 am

I just purchased this 1993 Mustang with a 5.0 5 speed and it has a slow oil leak on the transmission. Where do I add oil to a 5 speed and does it take a gear oil, if so what weight? How common is the 5 speed about leaks. This car has about 158,000 mile and suppose to be orginal. Thanks, jim1277

The trans has 2 square plugs on the P side. You use the extension for a socket with no socket on it. One for draining one for filling. I always filled the trans by taking a clear hose, running through the shifter bezel and in the top hole, then stuffing a funnel in the hose.
As of recently i use Sythentic ATF in everything seems to work fine for me, but check around, i have a tremec now.
Leaks happen, and really should be fixed, if you need a clutch that's a good time to do it.
I also think if the tail end of the housing is what's leaking, you can reseal that without taking the trans off the car, again check into that further before trying it.

DO NOT put gear oil in it. ATF only. The most likely place that its leaking from is the rear seal, and as 2000xp said you won't have to remove the tranny to replace it.
